Warren is a bass player, disc jockey, composer, music producer, music geek, nice guy, philosopher, diabetic, heavy sleeper, member of Grand Analog, and of course, music licensor with Hook Music at Pirate. He’s like a mix between a Blaxploitation film and an Italian crime drama from the 70s, and I wouldn’t be surprised if one day he’s more like Quincy Jones meets Ennio Morricone. You know, a nice blend of good, bad and ugly.. and if you ever need to know who played bass on the 19th track on Cannonball Adderley’s 10th record with producer David Axelrod on Fantasy Records in 1975, then be sure to contact him.

Over the years Ian has been called a lot of things – loud, inventive, sleepy, the second-greatest tiger wrestler – the list goes on. At Pirate, you can find him pretty much anywhere – in the studios, mending shoes, cooking breakfasts, recording voice and crashing blimps into dinosaurs just to see what sound they would make, which, it turns out, is pretty badass. The above has subsequently given him his official (unofficial) title of ‘Doer of Everything.’

Oh, and Pirate’s been tiger-free since at least 2011.

I was born on a Saturday, apparently the snowiest day of the winter, a couple weeks overdue. And I’ve been late for everything ever since. But I’m getting better. I’m one of the only people I know who was born, raised and lived in Toronto their whole life. When I was 20 I got a summer job in a recording studio which was so much fun it didn’t seem like work and before I knew it I had been there 15 years. I thought 15 years was enough at one job, especially a summer job so I left and got a job across the road, at Pirate. I still can’t believe I get paid to do what would be my hobby anyway. Of all the jobs I’ve ever had, Pirate’s been the best. (or at least, in the top 2)

Tyna Maerzke

Tyna is half Filipino and half German. As a producer at Pirate, her German side takes over- jobs are executed to the letter of the law, sessions are engineered with laser-like precision, if you attempt to hide an error she has ways of making you talk.

When not at work her Filipino side kicks in- she smiles for no apparent reason, her favourite movie is pronounced “The Pugative” starring “Harrison Pord.” And she can often be found shopping online, adding to her Imelda Marcos-sized shoe collection.
